Nov. 9 - 13th

 Hello Families,

We have had a short but meaningful week of learning. Here is what the students of Grade 1 have been up to...

LiteracyWe continue to practice our reading and writing to become stronger readers and writers. We are working towards using a variety of sentence frames and adding more detail to our writing to make our writing more interesting and put a better picture in the reader’s head. For example, we have learned that a sentence like “This is a little orange cat” tells the reader so much more than a sentence like “This is a cat”!

Science: We have talked a lot about how animals prepare for the seasons. We have learned that some animals hibernate during the winter and some animals migrate. Some animals also have adaptations to help them survive. This means that their body helps them live in their environment. Animals like hares change colour in the winter to help them blend into the snow!

Social Studies: We spent more time examining communities as we will be designing our own communities! Ask your child what a community needs.

Math: Grade 1’s continue to practice ordering, representing and comparing numbers 1-20 as well strategies to add.

This week we also took the time to honour and remember all those who fought for our rights and freedoms. Each cohort did an excellent job contributing to our school’s virtual Remembrance Day assembly. Mr. Huppie also came in to each class and taught us about the Indigenous Veterans Monument.

Reminders:

  • Absurdity Day is November 19th Wear something silly (school appropriate!)
  • No school Friday, November 20th.
