Sept. 28 - Oct. 2

Hello Families, here is what the Grade 1’s have been learning this week:

In literacy, students have been very busy! They continued to add to their reading stamina, learn more sight words and increase their reading fluency through poetry. We also worked on adding detail to our writing by adding describing words (eg colour and size words) and using different sentence starters (eg It is... I see a... There is...).

In math, we have continued our work in extending and translating patterns. Did you know that you can translate a pattern using attributes like numbers, shapes, actions and sounds? As well, we are identifying the core of a pattern. We have also practiced solving math facts using two strategies: our fingers and number lines. Ask your child what their favourite strategy is.

In social studies, we created posters representing our identities, or who we are. We presented these posters to our cohorts and did a great job speaking in a loud, clear voice and looking at our audience. It has been wonderful learning more about our classmates! We also wrote about the best part of ourselves.

In science, we have noticed the change in seasons. We will be looking more at the signs of Fall in the coming weeks.

This week, we observed Orange Shirt Day with the help of Mr. Huppie. We listened to stories, went on a walk in the community and made our own orange shirts and decorated them with symbols of love and caring. Every child matters and deserves to attend a safe and caring school.

Here are some pictures of us enjoying school in our pajamas for Spirit Day. We had a fun day learning and exploring while being nice and cozy!
