Hello Families! Here is what the Grade 1’s have been learning... 

Literacy: Students continue to develop their reading and writing skills in various activities.  


Math: Students sorted 2D shapes using common attributes. They realized that when we sort shapes, we put all the shapes that follow a rule together in one group, and we can put all the shapes that don’t follow that rule in another group! Students challenged themselves to find out a sorting rule when given groups of shapes.  

  

What was the sorting rule? Grade 1’s used their math brains to figure it out. 

Science: We have finished learning about each of the 5 senses and are going to apply our understanding next week to create a... SENSES SUPERHERO. Stay tuned! 😊 


Phys Ed: Both cohorts started a new unit in phys ed this week! Ms. Lang’s class began fitness and Ms. Magill’s class began soccer. 


As a school, we watched our Winter Concert! Each class did an amazing job and we loved watching all the different contributions and performances. Way to go CN Gunn students!! 

 

Reminders 

  • Last day of classes before Winter Break is Dec. 18th  

  • Our week of online learning (Jan 4th - Jan 8th) is fast approaching. Please be sure to contact your child’s teacher ASAP if there are any login or technological concerns prior to the Break to ensure a smooth transition and the continuity of fundamental learning 

  • Send in folder and Home reading each and every Tuesday

  The Grade   1’s   have   had another great   and busy   week of learning!   Here are some of the learning opportunities that our students participated in this week:   In math, we   began practicing our basic math facts to 5. W e continued to explore   and create   patterns . Students have also continued their   work in   representing a number in many ways   by creating flipbooks for numbers to ten.      In literacy,   we have been learning and practicing different ways to read a book   (we can look at the pictures, read the words, go on a word/letter hunt and retell the story).   Students have also worked hard on writing sentences. We know that a sentence starts with a capital letter, has finger spaces between words and ends with a period. October 5 - 9

 Hello Guardians, Happy Thanksgiving to you all. We hope that you can get plenty of rest and relaxation this long weekend.      As for this week, we have had a quiz on patterns and looked at how we can create, extend, name, and translate patterns as well as find the core of a pattern. Children have really enjoyed playing with and creating patterns using blocks, shapes, body actions, numbers, and letters.   We have been working on reading and writing with different words. As always, we work on starting sentences with capital letters and adding periods at the end.      We also have explored what it means to belong to different types of communities. We belong to our class, school, neighbourhood, family, city and country. We might also belong to a club, team, religion or cultural community as well. Dec. 14-18th

Hello Families!      Here is our last blog post for 2020.  We hope you have a wonderful and restful Winter Break. See you in 2021!     Literacy: Students continued to engage in a variety of writing and reading activities. We also practiced our  digital  literacy by spending more time on Google Classroom this week. Grade 1’s did a  great job   completing assignments online, turning them in and  reading on Raz Kids.     Math:  We developed our estimation skills more this week. We know that estimating is finding out how many without counting. It’s  like making a math guess! We also had fun exploring numbers to 100. Using a 100’s chart, we  had to find and  colour  certain numbers to create mystery art. It was math and art at the same time!      Science:  We wrapped up our Senses learning this week by designing, writing and sharing about our Senses Superheroes. Students did an amazing job creating unique superheroes.  We have also all  improved on  our  presenting  skills. Way to go  Grade
