 Hi Families!

Here is a peek at our learning this week:

Literacy: Students are continuing to learn and practice different reading and writing strategies to develop their proficiency as readers and writers.

Math: We are continuing to work hard on our addition skills and strategies. We have also begun counting in different ways. We learned that counting by 1’s isn’t very efficient, or very fast. Skip counting by 5’s is much faster! We noticed that when we skip count by 5’s, we found a pattern! All the numbers we say have either a 0 or a 5 in the ones place. Help me practice skip counting by 5’s at home.

Social StudiesGrade 1’s are community planners! Students have been tasked with designing their own community that people will want to live in and convincing others to move there. We discussed that a community needs places to live, work and play. Students decided that an appealing community also needs amenities like schools, swimming pools, restaurants, movie theatres and nature. As planners, they have started with an initial plan or draft and have received some peer feedback on how to better improve their community designs. Next week, students will begin their final drafts.

Getting some feedback about our initial drafts.

Science: We have started to explore our 5 senses. We have begun learning about our sense of touch. Our sense of touch helps us feel things like texturetemperature and painWe had fun feeling materials like bubble wrap, cotton balls and fabric and deciding whether they felt bumpy, rough, soft, smooth or spiky.

Using our sense of touch to sort objects.

Grade 1’s have also been learning and celebrating Metis culture this week with the help of Mr. Huppie. We had lots of fun trying jigging. We have also studied the artwork of Metis artist Leah Dorion. We noticed that her artwork features lots of colour, different lines and beadworkWe were so inspired by her artwork that we are creating our own. We are doing a great job incorporating her design elements in our own pieces. We will use this artwork in a buddy project with the Grade 6’s ttell and illustrate the story of Louis Riel.
