January 18th - 22nd

Hello Families, 

 

We had another great week of learning in Grade 1! 

 

Literacy: Grade 1’s continued to work as authors this week. We published our stories by making good copies of our work. We looked at different books and noticed that to be successful they had a title, interesting covers, words and pictures. We worked hard to make our covers look appealing so someone would want to pick up our story and read it! 

 

Math: We tried our math fast facts again this week and noticed that almost everybody made progress or improved. We are going to keep trying every week. Practice makes progress! This week we have also worked more on math word problems. We are focusing on thinking deeply about what the problem is asking us to do. Are we adding or subtracting?  


Social Studies: We continued learning about different celebrations. Mr. Huppie talked to us about Indigenous Pow-Wows. He showed us different videos of dances and they were very interesting. We noticed different designs, patterns and styles. Some of us even started to dance along with the videos! 


Science: We are loving learning about colour! We have continued to examine the different ways to create colour. We gathered different paint samples and were challenged to sort them from dark to light or light to dark and noted that lighter versions of a colour are clalled tones and darker ones are called shades.  We did pretty well! Check out some of our sorting below. 

 

Reminders: 

  • Tuesday folders and Home reading returned to school every Tuesday. 
  • Student Learning Conferences are Thursday, January 28 (4:00pm-8:00 pm) and Friday, January 29 (8:30 am-12:00pm). Please book a meeting time with your child’s teacher. 
  • No school for students on Friday, January 29.

Sept. 21-25

  The Grade   1’s   have   had another great   and busy   week of learning!   Here are some of the learning opportunities that our students participated in this week:   In math, we   began practicing our basic math facts to 5. W e continued to explore   and create   patterns . Students have also continued their   work in   representing a number in many ways   by creating flipbooks for numbers to ten.      In literacy,   we have been learning and practicing different ways to read a book   (we can look at the pictures, read the words, go on a word/letter hunt and retell the story).   Students have also worked hard on writing sentences. We know that a sentence starts with a capital letter, has finger spaces between words and ends with a period. May 31 - June 4

  Hello  Families ,   Wow! We can’t believe it’s already June. Here is some of our learning from this week:   Literacy :  We  are continuing to implement the skills of good writers  to be ready for Grade 2 . These include periods at the ends of our sentences, capital letters for names and at the start of sentences , referencing our word walls and personal dictionaries, sounding out words and adding juicy describing words.    Math:  We  are challenging our math brains this week! We are adding and subtracting with bigger and bigger numbers. We are using rods and cubes and  hundreds  charts to try adding and subtracting 2-digit num bers like 34 – 12 and 47 – 15. Dec. 14-18th

Hello Families!      Here is our last blog post for 2020.  We hope you have a wonderful and restful Winter Break. See you in 2021!     Literacy: Students continued to engage in a variety of writing and reading activities. We also practiced our  digital  literacy by spending more time on Google Classroom this week. Grade 1’s did a  great job   completing assignments online, turning them in and  reading on Raz Kids.     Math:  We developed our estimation skills more this week. We know that estimating is finding out how many without counting. It’s  like making a math guess! We also had fun exploring numbers to 100. Using a 100’s chart, we  had to find and  colour  certain numbers to create mystery art.
