April 6-9th

 Hello Families,

We hope you had a relaxing and wonderful Spring Break. Here is an update on our learning here in Grade 1:

Literacy: We continue to work on becoming stronger readers and writers through daily activities. Currently, we are focusing on persuasive writing. We know that persuasive writing is a type of writing that tries to convince the reader of an opinion or argument. We are working hard to include a strong argument in our writing that is justified, or backed up by three reasons.

Math: We have begun our new math unit measurement. Did you know that you can measure all sorts of things? These things include weight, distance, length, width, age, time, height, temperature and so many more! We have started by measuring the length and width of objects with non-standard units like blocks and footsteps.

Social StudiesWe have continued to look at how things change over time. We had lots of fun examining objects of the past and trying to guess what they were and what they were used for. Some were super easy to figure out and some were VERY challenging. Ask me about a floppy disk!

Science:  We are excited to begin our next science unit The Needs of Plants and Animals with some animal research.

Health: We are exploring different healthy choices in our lives. We’ve begun by learning about healthy food choices. We know that a balanced diet usually consists of fruits and vegetables, protein (usually things that come from an animal like dairy products or meat but can also include items like tofu and beans) and whole grain foods (bread, rice, noodles). We also learned that water is the best drink choice and foods like chocolate, fries or pizza are sometimes food. To demonstrate our understanding, we went “shopping” through grocery flyers and created a healthy food collage!

Reminders:

  • CNGReads is every Wednesday at 7 pm. Tune in for some great stories 😊

  • Please continue to send the Tuesday folder and home reading with your child each and every Tuesday.
