Feb. 22 - 26

 Hello Families, 

 

Here is an update on our learning here in Grade 1: 


Literacy: We are transitioning away from story-writing and celebrated our hard work by coming together with both cohorts virtually to share our wonderful stories. It was awesome to hear each other’s stories! 


Math: We spent some time sorting different 3D shapes using their attributes. Here are some pictures of our sorting. 

 

 

Top left: This student sorted the shapes using their number of faces (6).  

Top right: This student sorted shapes by their number of vertices or apex (0).  

Centre: This student sorted shapes on whether or not they could roll and slide. 

 

This was also the last week of our 3D shape learning. Next week, we are going to strengthen our number sense by exploring number lines more deeply. 


Social Studies: We are examining rural and urban communities. We looked closely at different pictures and started to draw conclusions about what we noticed. We noticed that urban places tend to be busy, have lots of people and buildings and don’t have as much nature. Rural places seem to have less people and buildings, sometimes farms, LOTS of nature and not as much traffic. We will continue to look at urban and rural communities and see what else we notice! 


Science: Thank you to all of the families who provided us with recyclable material! We are so excited to start our new Science unit “Building Things” next week. ðŸ˜Š  


Health: We recognized Pink Shirt Day this week and discussed the importance of treating each other with respect and kindness. We do not tolerate bullying!  


Reminders: 

  • Please try to bring a water bottle to school. This is another great way to keep everyone safe. 

  • Please continue to send the Tuesday folder and home reading with your child each and every Tuesday. Thank you for your support!

  The Grade   1’s   have   had another great   and busy   week of learning!   Here are some of the learning opportunities that our students participated in this week:   In math, we   began practicing our basic math facts to 5. W e continued to explore   and create   patterns . Students have also continued their   work in   representing a number in many ways   by creating flipbooks for numbers to ten.      In literacy,   we have been learning and practicing different ways to read a book   (we can look at the pictures, read the words, go on a word/letter hunt and retell the story).   Students have also worked hard on writing sentences. We know that a sentence starts with a capital letter, has finger spaces between words and ends with a period. October 5 - 9

 Hello Guardians, Happy Thanksgiving to you all. We hope that you can get plenty of rest and relaxation this long weekend.      As for this week, we have had a quiz on patterns and looked at how we can create, extend, name, and translate patterns as well as find the core of a pattern. Children have really enjoyed playing with and creating patterns using blocks, shapes, body actions, numbers, and letters.   We have been working on reading and writing with different words. As always, we work on starting sentences with capital letters and adding periods at the end.      We also have explored what it means to belong to different types of communities. We belong to our class, school, neighbourhood, family, city and country. We might also belong to a club, team, religion or cultural community as well. Dec. 14-18th

Hello Families!      Here is our last blog post for 2020.  We hope you have a wonderful and restful Winter Break. See you in 2021!     Literacy: Students continued to engage in a variety of writing and reading activities. We also practiced our  digital  literacy by spending more time on Google Classroom this week. Grade 1’s did a  great job   completing assignments online, turning them in and  reading on Raz Kids.     Math:  We developed our estimation skills more this week. We know that estimating is finding out how many without counting. It’s  like making a math guess! We also had fun exploring numbers to 100. Using a 100’s chart, we  had to find and  colour  certain numbers to create mystery art. It was math and art at the same time!      Science:  We wrapped up our Senses learning this week by designing, writing and sharing about our Senses Superheroes. Students did an amazing job creating unique superheroes.  We have also all  improved on  our  presenting  skills. Way to go  Grade
